Accounting 101

Hello Philadelphians, this post is for you. Not that the rest of the world can’t read it, but I request the help of my fellow Philadelphians in particular. Now that I am self-employed I am in need of an accountant; someone who knows numbers and can help me out with filing taxes quarterly, any sort of Philadelphia or Pennsylvania-related business fees I am now required to pay, and counsel on any other financial hurdles I will need to be jumping over for the remainder of the year. Maybe in the future I can do this myself from the backseat of my flying car, but since this is my first year on my own business-wise, I need a hand. I have met/talked with a couple local accountants and wasn’t too impressed. I may be my only employee, but that doesn’t mean you can treat me like I’m a hack and you are waiting for your big clientele to stroll through the door. Hell no. Hopefully there is one of you out there in the area who can refer me to someone they know and trust. So, do you know a local accountant?

I know a VERY nice and trustworthy accountant I’ve used for about 10 years now who is based in King of Prussia, PA. Richard Capasso from Clairmont Paciello. Their website isn’t so great, but Rich is an awesome accountant.

I recommend Jay Walsh

He has been saving me $$$ for the past three years. Also, he is used to working with designers who have had FT jobs and are bring in cash via freelance. Myself, Tom Lehmann, April, Andy… we all have gone thru him.

I recommend Andrew Piernock. He started his own accounting practice about 10 years ago so he also knows what it’s like going into business for himself. His clients are large and small companies, and he’s very down to earth and won’t treat you like a hack.

Tony Luke is a risky choice. His wife Betty is HORRIBLE with money, but she don’t mean no harm.

I will be a CPA in 2 years and taxes is just what I happen to be interested in. If you are still looking then I will be happy to help. However, having done my own taxes for my small business last year, I found IRS.gov to be incredibly helpful.

I may be a bit late to the game, but I’ll second the vote for Rich Capasso. Great guy, great accountant. And he can even recommend a good, less expensive bookkeeper for all your day-to-day stuff. e-mail me offline if you need particulars.
