See You at SXSW
Why does the build up to South By Southwest remind me so much of finals week in college? All of a sudden, late nights become commonplace, and days blur into each another. The mass combination of tying up client work for a week away and putting together presentations creeps up on me every time. Luckily, I just got a little “break” away from the computer to finish cutting out some business cards. Despite the build-up and the extra work added to an already full schedule, I really do look forward to this more and more each year. It’s something like a masochistic vacation. This year Liz will also be in tow, likely trying to drum up some business in between making fun of me and the rampant geekery at the conference.
I’ll be taking part in two presentations this year. The first, with Cameron Moll and Rob Weychert, is entitled “After the Brief: A Field Guide to Design Inspiration”:
You’ve received the creative brief; now what? Learn how to draw creative inspiration for your web design projects from a number of likely and unlikely sources. Using examples from our heros’ work as well as our own, we’ll demonstrate how successful projects have benefitted from the use of all five senses, a keen understanding of history, and a little luck.
The second, with Andy Clarke, is entitled “Bullet Tooth Web Design: Plan Your Web Site like Pulling off a Robbery”:
Just like pulling off the perfect robbery, pulling off the perfect web site needs to be planned and executed with care. Do it right and you’ll go home with the jewels, do it wrong and you’ll be doing time in the Pen! This informative and light hearted presentation will take you through planning, pulling off and of course, the getaway.
If you see me walking around, please say hello! Even if I know you, it’s probably still a good idea to mention your name if you run into me. I am spectacularly awful with names (though fairly reliable with faces). Lastly, be sure to check out what Rob and the gang from the new book Web Standards Creativity will be up to. You could grab a free copy by just saying hi to all the authors! The book is worth it for Rob’s chapter alone (luckily, it’s full of other good stuff too). See you there!

I am so upset that I am not able to go. I lack the means and the funding to make it out there. I’d love to see your panels but unfortunately, I’m stuck in the blistering cold northeast with no money.

Don’t be a stranger this year, Jason. We met briefly last year, but I didn’t really get to talk to you much.
Oh, that’s strange. I’ve heard things about that panel Anton mentioned too, something about it being ridiculously awesome. All the cool kids will probably be there.
I’m hoping to actually get to do more than shake your hand this year - I think the best bet is for you to skip your own panel and come to the panel of which Anton and Patrick speak. Cameron can certainly take care of your panel on his own, that way Rob can also swing by. I mean, you wouldn’t want to miss the coolest panel in the Saturday 11:30-12:30 timeslot, would you?
Trust me, it’s a better alternative than our panel + audience crashing your panel ;)
Saturday morning panel showdown! You guys should fight it out on Friday night so we know who to go see…

I think it’s weird they scheduled two panels covering such closely related material for the same slot. But, it sounds like everyone will be heading towards your panel anyway. I wonder if they will miss me if I duck out of mine :D
Dan Rubin: That’s the tough thing; Hugh says the conference will be even bigger this year than last year, which means it’s going to be even more difficult to spend time with everyone. There were some people I was really looking forward to talking to last year, and I only ended up getting to say hi. Maybe I just won’t sleep this year!
Both sessions look great, it’ll be hard picking one. I think a traditional coin flip will be in order, and I’ll just have to hope that they podcast the other session.

Nah… I’m pretty sure you’ve got us beat in numbers. Though, I am curious though to see what we might be covering in overlap (if anything).
It’s all good though, since whichever room people decide to go in, I’m confident that they’ll get a great presentation and come out happy.
Also, if you’re feeling competitive, we could just take it striaight to the lanes on Sunday night.
What: SXSW Interactive 2007 Panel Smackdown
When: Saturday, March 10th, 11:30am-12:30pm, Austin, TX
Why: The panelists of The Influence of Art in Design and After the Brief: A Field Guide to Design Inspiration will battle to win the coveted “Golden Speaker” trophey (photo forthcoming). Audience members are encouraged to participate in the competition, especially if Anton and JSM get into a brawl in the hallways. Oh, and the losers get to buy shots for the winners :P
Anton: We will definitely be down for some hot bowling action on Sunday night. I should warn you though, we belong to a league in Philly now, and we might potentially be even worse than we were last year :D
Dan Rubin: Ah, but what are the criteria for winning?
JSM: I’d say “attendance” but you guys have the bigger room, so… let’s go with “percentage of room capacity” ;)
Dan, Anton, Patrick, Cameron, Rob, etc.: We should get some construction guys together on friday night to build you all a ring and take care of this showdown WWE style.
Mike Stickel: Now that wouldn’t be fair, we would smoke those guys :D
JSM: I wouldn’t talk smack too soon, you obviously haven’t seen Dave Shea’s piledriver, which makes The Undertaker look like a pansy…

I think you should just give up sleep. We can have a contest of who can still talk after day 3… I think Jeremy Keith and I usually need tea/lemon/honey by then :)

Cindy Li: I definitely need to drink some tea this year; my voice gave out at the closing party last year and it sucked. Maybe I should carry around a notepad so that I can write my conversations and hold them up for people to read :D

Richard B: They haven’t said anything other than that podcasts will be available online after the conference. It sounds like they may release them more in one or a few bulk dumps, rather than just a few a week like they did last year.
Why are two of the best panels I wanna go to overlapping! :( I guess otherwise they’d both be overcrowded, though.

I didn’t get the opportunity to meet you in person, but I did attend your panels. I especially enjoyed the “Field Guide to Design Inspiration” you and Rob did together. It was unfortunate that Cameron couldn’t be there, but you guys did a great job anyway. Your presentation was well prepared and definitely inspirational…thanks!
