I supose it’s just another one of those things.
I wonder if at one time there wasn’t any plumbing. I.e. did it work like the bathrooms on an old ship or in a castle? Imagine that falling past your window…

No, I can vouch for the real-ness of it. My wife is from Estonia, and in a large castle in the city of Narva, there is a bathroom hanging off one of the towers, several stories up.
We got to look down through the toilet at the ground below. It was freaky, and I was thinking “If I fell, that’d be the oddest description of death ever: Man falls to death through a toilet.”
