Shaun made me do it… and I am all for blind hive mentality:

  1. Grab the nearest book.
  2. Open the book to page 23.
  3. Find the fifth sentence.
  4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

The so-called laws of motion are a big hoax.

Commentary (17):

1. Shaun Inman says… apr 15, 2004 | 4:45 pm

Which book did that come from? Did it have an orange cover at least?

2. Jason Santa Maria says… apr 15, 2004 | 4:49 pm

Nope, not orange, just black and white. I grabbed White Noise.

3. Merritt says… apr 15, 2004 | 5:45 pm

Yup, that’s right, I checked. Good job Jason!

4. RJ Hampden says… apr 15, 2004 | 6:41 pm

Hence, it is not possible to change the latency.

5. Shaun Inman says… apr 15, 2004 | 6:46 pm

Haha, Merritt actually checked! I was a little worried when I picked up Zeldman’s book that I was going to mistake some punctuation and post the wrong sentence. I can just imagine an hour later someone calling me on misquoting the Good Orange Book.

6. Rob Weychert says… apr 15, 2004 | 7:44 pm

That’s actually one of my favorite passages from White Noise.

I was gonna follow the herd and do this on my blog, but I think it’s more fun as a conversational thing, and my eternally temporary site doesn’t have a comment system set up yet. So here’s mine, which is pretty funny:

“This book will help you find out.”

7. Jason Santa Maria says… apr 15, 2004 | 8:36 pm

I also regard Zeldman’s book quite highly, Shaun. It was the catalyst for this site.

8. Jimmy Ray Van Dutch says… apr 16, 2004 | 1:49 am

“Bible Study on Thursday @ 7:00 - 9:00 pm”

9. bearskinrug says… apr 16, 2004 | 7:02 am

Jimmy Ray is right, Jason. That Bible Study Timetable pamphlet had as much influence on this site as any ‘book’.

10. Matt Davis says… apr 16, 2004 | 1:56 pm

“They chased him for a long, long time and one of them in particular twice very nearly got a lasso around his head”

11. Merritt says… apr 16, 2004 | 5:51 pm

“But this little episode also had an effect on Fyodor Pavlovich - and a very original one.”

12. Christoph says… apr 17, 2004 | 1:56 pm

“So there was a madness about wide-open beavers.”
