24 Ways To Impress Your (Web Geek) Friends
Ho, ho, ho! This year I was asked to pen an article for the annual web geek advent calendar, 24 ways. I chose to tackle a problem that pops up very frequently for me: matching colors from a set palette for elements in a variety of shapes and sizes. Often times, using the color hex value from a palette may not yield the results you are looking for. Those are the times when you need to be a bit underhanded and cheat your colors. Wanna see what I mean? Head over to the latest 24 ways and have a gander at Cheating Color.
Last year’s 24 ways was chock full of great tips, and this year’s hasn’t been any different. I’ll leave you with a few of my favorites:
- Compose to a Vertical Rhythm, by Richard Rutter: Like music, typography needs rhythm too.
- A Message To You, Rudy - CSS Production Notes, by Andy Clarke: Simplify coding workflow with a team.
- Boost Your Hyperlink Power, by Jeremy Keith: Inject more semantic value into the humble hyperlink.
- Intricate Fluid Layouts in Three Easy Steps, by Nate Koechley: Wonderful fluid layout starters.
- Photographic Palettes, by Dave Shea: A simple method to pluck color palettes from photos.
Jason, great article. I feel validated after having felt a pang of guilt for having stepped outside the guidelines in the past to accomplish consistent color. I also agree with your picks for favorites out of the 24ways set. I was especially inspired by the vertical rhythm article and will be implmenting it on my blog.
excellent. Was just encountering such an issue recently. Also thanks for the link to Jeremy’s article and the reminder to read through all the articles over at 24.
Seems like I’ve seen quite a bit of color talk on 24 ways this year which is great. I get a lot of people asking me for more color resources and it’s so helpful to have more places to refer them to.
“consider hex numbers to be guidelines rather than law”
Thanks for that. ;)
Great article! I’ve been cheating our color palette a bit and your topic definitely made me feel much less dirty about it.
The article definetly makes “tweaking” the color pallette seem acceptable, after all the “optical color’s” importance overules everything else!
A good article tip Mr.Santamaria. Thags a lot!
I know 25th way…
Great article Jason
Fantastic article covering some points I really needed some good usability info for.
