Trick-or-Treat

The candy bowl is full and we’ll be decorating our house this weekend. Horror films are usually playing at night, and The Misfits remain in heavy rotation. What’s that mean? Well, I guess it means we are horror nerds. But it also means it’s nearly Halloween! As always, here are your yearly batch of seasonal tricks and treats. On Screen… more »

Video Game Bliss

I recently became the owner of a new Nintendo DS, for the sole reason of playing the new Mario Kart, conveniently called Mario Kart DS and sold in a bundle with the system. Longtime readers of the site will recognize my extreme affliction for Mario Kart games after getting hooked in college. The GameCube’s Mario Kart Double Dash was a… more »

A Musical Baton

I’ve been passed a musical baton by Jon, and Meme Monday rolls along! Total volume of music files on my computer: 12.58 Gb. The last CD I bought was:
“Kick Out The Jams” by MC5. Song playing right now:
”Cut Self Not” by Faraquet Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me: “Birdhouse In Your Soul”… more »

2004 Favorites

I realize Jon may have beat me to it by a bit (we’ll just chalk that up to the time difference ;D), but I figured I would throw this out there anyway. It’s been a good year to have ears and eyes, so here is a brief celebration of the best of what the year had to offer. These are… more »

Recommending

Two quick recommendations for you. Go see The Incredibles. You like animation right? Of course you do. And you know that Pixar has consistently turned out some of the smartest feature-length animated films in years? Of course you do. The Incredibles marks their first genuine attempt at a film about people, not animals or toys, though still not entirely normal… more »

For Entertainment Purposes Only

Your guide to my tastes! This is how I like to get in the mood for Halloween. These are not best-of lists, these are just some of my personal favorites, so don’t yell at me if you favorite movie sucks and didn’t make the cut. Also, I don’t claim to be well read (or listened), so if you think me… more »

Jukebox Zeros, let there be rock

In perfect Bill & Ted style, my brother’s band, the Jukebox Zeros, were invited to compete in Little Steven’s Underground Garage Battle of the Bands. That’s Little Steven as in E Street Band and Sopranos fame, and the Battle of the Bands as in last band standing conquers all and takes away the most tail (oh, and the winning band… more »

Fun With A Purpose

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is yet another superb outing from Charlie Kauffman, penman to such personal favorites as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. Favorably, Eternal Sunshine comes in just as twisted as his predecessors, blending great character and dialogue control while injecting a realistic human element absent from most fare these days. Pair this with Michael Gondry’s fantastic… more »

Music for the Day

Something Old The Proud… The Few… The Descendents are back with an upcoming EP and full-length in the works. What’s more, they finally have a proper website. Something New Franz Ferdinand (the band, not the archduke) has a very cool sound, and a nicely designed video for Take Me Out… yes, I say designed because it’s teeming with old typography… more »

A Throwback of Sorts

Saturday I saw The Dillinger Escape Plan and The Locust at the Troc, marking the first show I have been to in months. I hadn’t seen any of the bands live before, luckily it did not disappoint. Unfortunately, I only caught the last song from the show opener Orthrelm, but they left a very good first impression. Next up was… more »

Elliott Smith 1969-2003

Authorities still don’t know exactly what happened, but Smith apparently died from a self-inflicted knife wound to the chest. How very sad. Elliott Smith was truly a great talent and will surely be missed. Read about it here, here, and here.… more »

Johnny Cash 1932-2003

I don’t really have anything to say that could possibly sum up this man’s life. There are just some people who shouldn’t get old and die.… more »

Pixies Reunite?

Can it be true? Pitchfork thinks so. Is this the news that will rock the indie world? Do people still care? Whatever the case, I’ll take one ticket please.… more »

Best Band Name Ever

Have you ever found yourself saying “Man, that would make a great band name”? Well, now you dreams of thinking of the best band ever name can come true. Tell the world about it (at least both of the people who come to this site)! Since we all seem to come up with fake band names so much, I figured… more »

Cheap Porno

Last night was The New Pornographers’ first show in Philly in 2 ½ years (Not that I knew who they were back then). From up north they came (Vancouver to be exact) in support of their fantastic sophomore spectacle, Electric Version. The show was only 12 bucks, a welcomed departure from the TLA’s usual high ticket prices. With vocal leads… more »

De-Loused in the Comatorium

Whether founded or unfounded, by saying this I risk similar commentary to my last post from my three regular visitors; I just aquired the new Mars Volta album, and it fucking rocks. A few years ago my two favorite bands were probably the Murder City Devils and At the Drive-In. One of the best shows in recent memory brought both… more »

The World’s Tallest Midget

Ever since I began listening to music, They Might Be Giants have been a staple. As a creative person, their quirky personalities, inventive songs and trend-setting style made them instant role models for me. After many failed attempts at instant rock stardom, I gave up on trying to follow in their footsteps and abandoned all hope of ever opening up… more »

The iTunes Music Store

Yesterday Apple (everyone’s favorite computer company) unveiled a new music service called The iTunes Music Store to coincide with the release of a new version of iTunes and a revamped iPod. The service allows users to download songs for 99¢ and full CDs for around $10 a pop. In addition to that, iTunes now supports the AAC format (Advanced Audio… more »

Radiohead on the Sly

Some friends of mine happened upon the new Radiohead album (in mp3 form) on the internet today. I am listening to it this moment in fact. I have also heard that the internet leaks are not the final mastered versions of the songs. Whatever the case, it’s awful damn good. Some great pop action mixed with some very different structural… more »

Wait a Minute Mr. Postman

Every once in a while you get an album that you can’t seem to get out of your stereo. For local crazed mustache man ROb Weychert it’s Lightning Bolt’s new Wonderful Rainbow. For me, it’s The Postal Service’s new Give Up. I just got my hands on it this weekend and have been listening to it more that what would… more »

The Days Are Just Packed

Friday night’s festivities included a show at the First Unitarian Church with Pinback and Threnody Ensemble. Threnody Ensemble brought something really different to the show with a sort of indie rock chamber music blend that was truly enthralling. Their music was equal parts improv, performance art, and orchestral arrangement. I just love watching and hearing a cello played live. Sadly,… more »

Pins and Needles

This morning found me in the hospital, not in the ER, but in The Medical Arts Pavilion at Suburban General near Norristown. Don’t worry, I’m not dying, at least that’s what they tell me now. I went in for what is called an EMG, which stands for Sticking needles in your muscles and sending an electrical current through them. It… more »
